Well Said!!! (re: tourists)
Posted Tuesday, November 15th, 2005 by nycgadgetgirlI just ran across this post re: tourists to our fair city. Well said!!! I’m tempted to print it out and hand it to tourists on the street. I’m always tripping over them anyway, so jamming a paper in their hand wouldn’t require any extra effort.

Aw, that’s tame compared to what we used to do to Japanese tourists who came to the Pearl Harbor, naval base where I was stationed.
They used to show up in chain-smoking, camera’laden herds of 35 or 45 (depending on the size of the tour bus) identically-dressed tourists who would invariably ask, “Excuse please… where is USS Arizona (they were looking for the memorial).
The answer we used to give them each and every time this happened was “Right where you left it”.
I guess living and working every day within sight of a mass grave for over 1100 sailors who’s remains are still aboard the sunken battleship made me a tad testy. Just a tad, though.

David - I understand. When tourists have the insensitivity to ask a random New Yorker on the street “How do I get to ‘ground zero’?” my response is a direct look in the eyes and “Go to Hell.”
However they may take it, it is an accurate response.

I’m surprised anyone would have to ASK. Apparently doing one’s research is not a requirement these days… (shakes head)
