Are My Blog Posts Too Random?

Posted Tuesday, December 13th, 2005 by nycgadgetgirl

According to this article that I stumbled across after following a link from Jeru Guru’s blog, it is a “blog mistake” to “not stick to your theme for the majority of the entries in your blog.”

I’d guess that, other than that, I pretty much “follow the rules,” but do there really need to be rules? I started blogging for my own enjoyment and I keep doing it because I enjoy the interaction with other bloggers that I’ve come in contact with (even though I don’t have the kind of time I’d like to spend reading and writing).

So… are my blog posts too random? Does it matter? Do you have a blog theme that you stick to?

Oh crap… there were rules? Why didn’t anyone tell me?!

I, and probably the authors of other blogs that I read on a daily basis, are in the camp of “I blog because I feel like it”, like you. I never had any intention of creating a “theme” for my site, and more than likely I never will. Rules were made to be broken :)

I think there are only rules if you’re trying to Make A Statement with your blog. If you blog because you want to, and because you find random things interesting (or think your friends & readers might find them interesting), then there are no rules (other than possibly good taste, and even that is malleable).

If you set out to create/advertise/attract readers to something that has A Purpose… a political blog, perhaps… then you have a minor obligation to stick to that purpose. But even then, I still think you can stray from the stated topic or theme on occasion without readers running screaming for the hills. (Like when I had a sports column in the paper… during the school breaks, there wasn’t much to talk about, since I mostly covered local and college sports, so I’d write about random things, including my dog (who went to ballgames with me and was well known all over town). The “Trouble” columns had quite a following, and the folks who were there to read my take on local sports knew I’d come back to that in a few weeks, so they at least tolerated my little excursions.)

WTF-EVER, is what I have to say about “The Rules”.

I think it’s hard for someone who blogs to maintain a theme, unless it’s something they’re really passionate about.

  5. Jack Says:

I follow one rule, my own. I say do what you want within your domain.

  6. Bayou Says:

Those of us who write journal type blogs know that our lives ARE our themes and well, life is random and rules are meant to be broken! :)

David, Ami, Debbie, Lachlan, Jack & Bayou - You guys all rock. Thank you. I feel much better now about my randomness. With such awesome people reading my blog, what does it matter if I’m random? :)
And PS to David - LOL! If you don’t need the rules, I sure as heck don’t need ‘em either!

I didn’t know there were rules! I just type what I’m thinking about or what I did that day.
