Rowboats, Whales, and Fishermen
Posted Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 by nycgadgetgirlThe firm I work for recently got engaged on a big deal. The CEO called an all hands meeting in the conference room to give us a pep talk about all the long hours we’re about to be working. He drew a great analogy. Forgive me if you’ve heard this; I think he made it up. Either way, I loved it. He said "If you go out in a rowboat fishing for whale, when you catch one you’d better hold on tight and hope you can keep the boat afloat."

Pretty impressive! He told you he was going to demand a lot of overtime, and sent you away feeling inspired. I hope it works out great for all of you.

Personally, I walked out feeling overworked and underpaid, not inspired. However, in investment banking you get paid based on the profit turned by the firm, so hope springs eternal.
