You Asked What You Could Do

Posted Saturday, August 12th, 2006 by nycgadgetgirl

Alright gang, a few of you asked what you could do to help Benedict and Chaos. I’m going to tell you. On Saturday, August 19th, Chaos is going to the vet for a checkup, her second distemper/parvo shot, her rabies shot, a fecal, a heartworm test, and 6 months of heartworm preventative. The receptionist at the vet’s office estimated $250 for all of this. I have, oh, I dunno, about $15 at the moment, so whoever wants to help, please comment and I’ll email you. (I’m not setting up a paypal thingie, cz paypal sucks in a huge way.)

It would be cheaper if we took her to the ASPCA, but I can’t trust them not to try and take her away from Benedict. I promised Benedict we’d go to my vet, cz I trust them. I told the receptionist the situation and she said another client actually brought in a homeless person and their dog recently too. Kewl!

More than anything else, this is what really needs to be done for this dog. She needs healthcare and she needs her city license, which she can’t get without a rabies shot.

I think it’s also important that I add something here about my philosophy on helping homeless people. I’ve befriended a few homeless people in the 14 years that I’ve lived in NYC. I have never once given any of them money, but I have given them some of what they needed - conversation, food, blankets, etc. In choosing to help Chaos, I am not supporting Benedict’s decision to live in the streets (yes, he has other options). Benedict is a pretty good guy though and he’s taking the best care of Chaos that he can in his situation. The animal shelters in NYC are crowded and dogs are euthanized here EVERY SINGLE DAY. Chaos is a BIG dog and wouldn’t have a chance of being adopted if she were taken into the shelter. With Benedict she’s getting love, training, food, care, etc… that is what I’m supporting by helping Chaos - one less dog euthanized in the city shelter.

Please help if you can. Thanks.

I just dropped a check in the mail (well, okay, Paytrust will put it in the mail on Monday, but you know what I mean…), so that’s a start. Hopefully some more folks can step up and we can get the whole bill covered!

My check goes out Monday. Together, we can defray the costs and get Chaos taken care of.

Awwww, man… I love PayPal. PayPal loves me. My PayPal account has really money in it! Pretty please?

I’d love to have some of your real money, but I don’t have a paypal account and I don’t want to set one up just for this.

Years ago, when paypal was still in diapers, they somehow managed to let someone set up an account with an email address that wasn’t theirs… it was mine. It was one of those first initial + last name + local ISP addresses. I started getting email for the customer in question. I ignored it at first, assuming it would stop. It didn’t. I called paypal. They didn’t care and wouldn’t help. Their reason was that I wasn’t a customer, so there was nothing they could do for me. I started getting confirmations when this person completed transactions. Paypal still didn’t care. I begged them to call him. They wouldn’t. Finally, after several months, I gave up. I used the email address (MY email address) to request his password. I logged in as him and changed the email address to thisisnotyouremail@nyc.rr.com. I’m sure that locked him out of his account, but I had no choice. They wouldn’t help me and they wouldn’t call him. So… I made it his problem and hopefully - since he was their customer - he made it theirs. I swore then that I’d never trust paypal with my personal information.

So, if paypal can somehow send me some of your real money without me having a paypal account… GREAT. Otherwise, hopefully you’ll send a check. Or I guess I’ll have to do without. :(

OK, stop the presses… my sister (Debbie G. in the comments above) just said that anyone who wants to donate via paypal, can send it to her and she’ll send me another check. So, if you want to use paypal, comment here and I’ll send you her email address.

I think you did the right thing by logging into the account and changing the email addy. Assuming the guy didn’t have money in the account, he would then be able to fix the problem by calling in and giving PayPal all his identifying info, or he could choose to abandon the account. I also feel like PayPal did the right thing, too — they didn’t have any way to identify you, and you could have just been up to “mischief”. You’re just the type ;-)

LOL! Hey, wait a minute… I resemble that remark!

And, honestly, I don’t think they did the right thing. I pointed out to them they were giving me the opportunity to log into his account and use it to my advantage. I asked them to CALL HIM and have him verify his email address. Even if I had been lying, that wouldn’t have caused any trouble. If I hadn’t been an honest person, I could have been spending his money!!! But this post isn’t about paypal. It’s about Chaos. So send money! ;)
