Commuting In The Rain
Posted Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 by nycgadgetgirlFat people meandering along on the sidewalk bother me.
Umbrellas in my face really bother me.
But, FAT PEOPLE WITH UMBRELLAS???
AUGH!
Edit after the fact: I’m not talking about any and every overweight person and I shouldn’t have written the post the way I did, but since I don’t normally believe in editing or deleting my posts… I’m clarifying. What bothers me is when anyone, of any size, is inconsiderate on the sidewalk. It happens to be that there are a number of people that walk slowly in the middle of the sidewalk on my way to work many days and they make it very hard for the 100s of other people trying to move faster and more efficiently around them. They happen to mostly be large. It also really bothers me when people are inconsiderate with their umbrellas; I’m tall and you have no idea how many umbrella spokes to the face I have to dodge when it is raining. THIS PARTICULAR MORNING, a person, who happened to be quite large and carrying an umbrella was walking the wrong way through a crowd - completely oblivious - and smacking everyone with their freaking umbrella. I’m sorry if my post was inconsiderate, prejudiced or inflammatory.

People are getting larger and larger and larger, and the sidewalks and buses and airplanes are staying the same size, so it’s not surprising that at some point you’re going to find flesh meandering into areas where flesh has never before ventured
I totally get what you’re saying… it’s bad enough when people don’t “go with the flow” in a crowd, but when they also take up a lot of room it can be frustrating if you want to move quickly. I think it’s perfectly fine if you want to vent occasionally, and don’t think you should always have to worry about being PC. I know you’d never intentionally hurt anyone’s feelings.

I got squished on a flight to LA recently as 2 large people had only bought 2 seats but occupied 3 and there was no way for anyone else in their row to get sat down. 4 of us ended up sharing 3 seats during the flight with me in the attendants jump seat for takeoff. I used to be really big and now I’m a six I can really see why people get mad with big people. You are absolutely right to express your opinion

Jenna, you took the words out of my mouth. I, too, am very bothered by slow walkers who do tend to be fat and who enjoy walking in the middle of the sidewalk intead of walking to the side. My other “favorites” are tourists and chain-walkers who take up the entire width of the sidewalk AND move like snails on top of that. Urgh!

THE CHAIN WALKERS!!! I’m feeling ya there Nat. They make me insane too.
