Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Posted Friday, November 24th, 2006 by nycgadgetgirl

Brooklyn Botanic GardenMiss ~T~ and I went to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for the first time last month. A friend that lives in Brooklyn invited us out to visit the Garden and have dinner w/her in Park Slope. We almost never venture into the boros unless we’re headed to the airport, but we make exceptions for friends. Boy, were we glad we did! Everything was just gorgeous, dinner was delicious and the company was wonderful.

I uploaded my favorites of all the photos ~T~ took. Click the pretty picture to visit the gallery.

Thanks for the great day in Brooklyn Pam. We owe you one!

NYC Photographs

Posted Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 by nycgadgetgirl

I took a day off from my “real” job today and BOY did I get a lot done. AND, I even relaxed a little too.

After I ran my last errand of the day (picking up laundry at 9:55 PM), I finally uploaded some of my favorite NYC photos. You can see them here if you’d like!

Taken in NYC, August 2004
(and not at all retouched or colored, as I would have no idea how to do something like that)

OK… that was scary…

Posted Tuesday, September 21st, 2004 by nycgadgetgirl

Every time I think I’ve gotten over feeling like we’re under attack when I hear a loud noise, something happens to change all that. Again.

Tonight, my daughter and I had just walked into our apartment when we heard an explosion. I ran to the window and saw people standing in the street staring down 8th Avenue with all too familiar dumbstruck looks on their faces. “Hmmm… that can’t be good…” then BLAM a louder explosion - that I can FEEL through the floor - and I see what looks like a huge piece of asphalt or building concrete come flying out from 38th Street into 8th Avenue. (I found out later, that was probably just a manhole cover or one of those metal plates they put over the streets here.) “What should I do? Let’s start by closing the window!”

So, thinking there are bombs going off within view of my apartment, I close the window and the curtains, herd my daughter and the puppy into the bathroom and then into the bathtub, turn on the radio, and grab the cell phone. Who am I calling? My ex-husband of course. He’s with FDNY and AT WORK. He hadn’t heard anything yet, so he says stay put while he finds out and he’ll call me back.

My daughter was totally frightened and a TOTAL TROOPER about the whole thing. She was starting to panic and when I told her to calm down, she pulled herself together and completely kept her wits about her. I am very proud of her.

Long story short, it turned out to be an underground fire causing explosions and blowing manhole covers into the air. I went out on the fire escape and got some pictures of the response. The ex got called to the scene and parked outside my building, so we went down and said hello, and then we trotted off to the dog run like any other night.

Note to self: I really should get around to buying evacuation backpacks for all of us and stocking them up with the necessities to hike out of the city. I’d hate to not be prepared for the real thing.

The West Side at Sunset

Otherwise titled “The One that Got Away”

As my daughter and I were leaving home to walk the dog this evening, she (my daughter, not the dog) grabbed the camera. Even with the camera along though, taking pictures was the last thing on my mind. After we’d been out for about a half hour, I hear “Wow, beautiful” and I turn to see my daughter looking east, transfixed by the way the setting sun is hitting the buildings.

I grab the camera, run to a good spot, and start taking pictures, but the sun is SETTING and I don’t have much time. Then I realize the exposure is set all wrong on the camera. I fix that and snap one more, line up what looks like a perfect shot, and… everything goes blank. The batteries died. The sun set and the shot was gone. All I have is this not-so-bad one. It will have to do. :)

A Few Other Photos From Saturday

Now that I _HAVE_ the photoblog, that should sufficiently motivate me to carry the camera around more often. Luckily, I have a few other photos from Saturday to post in the meantime!
