What A Good Boy

After reading Bones Would Rain from the Sky and then reading some other training booklets by the same author, I have been working on teaching Snickers more self control. He’s at work with me today and it is lunchtime. One of my co-workers (who IS a dog person) won’t tolerate Snick being in his office while he eats lunch. Each time I call Snick away, he will check in and then run back over there. Today, I called Snick to me and put him in a down stay right next to my desk. He stayed there for 10 minutes without budging. (Then I released him, because I didn’t want to push my luck and ask for more than he’s capable of quite yet.)
What a good boy!!!

10 minutes? That’s fantastic! Wolf has ADD…10 seconds would be his limit, especially if food was involved!!!

Well… I have to admit, food WAS involved! I’ve been teaching him to stay longer and longer by making him do it when he wants something - a chew stick or a special treat. So, today, when I told him “down, stay,” he knew he’d get something yummy from me when it was over.

I have yet to succeed in teaching Sumi down/stay. I need to work on that one. But she has improved so much over the past few months. She’s really a good dog, overall.

Wow 10 whole minutes? You never told me about that. I didn’t know he could stay for so looong.
